The Foyer
The foyer can be a large or small space however, the impact on the observer has to be one that captures their attention and heighten their curiosity to view what comes next. Achieving the “wow” factor when the front door is opened is very important because first impressions count so send the right message. Put the focus on creating a celebration of vignettes of experiences that reflect a warm and cozy environment.
Functionality and beauty are the key points to decorating this area, which can be many shapes. It can be a narrow room, a raised area or an open space bounded by a high wall or screen. More importantly it is a high traffic and high use area where the materials and colours must be durable, practical and tie into the total expression of the style of the house.
The foyer can have a closet, a window, a console table, a bench, artwork, mirror or a niche. To design this space think about what activities that may go on to decide what is needed to make things flow for receiving guests, deliveries, or unwanted callers. It is important to be able to see who is coming to the front door and for the foyer to relate to parking area.
Colour
Choosing colours for the foyer is tricky. Being a transitional space, wall surface is broken up with doors, staircases etc. Refrain from using too much colour; keep it simple. The space should have a crisp and airy feel. The colour can be slightly darker in tone than the rest of the house. In a large foyer be a bit more conservative with the colour choices. However, in smaller foyers be bold and express yourself.
Lighting
The area should be brightly lit. However, you can use dimmers to create atmosphere when necessary. Chandeliers are a good idea as they create a cozy feeling. Scones give interesting accents to the composition.
Furniture
Furniture can be functional or decorative. Pay particular attention to the scale of the furniture as oversized pieces might be overwhelming. Why not create a focal point. This could be a console table with artwork hanging above with a decorative lamp or floral arrangement.
Pieces that are chosen should have a logical association with the lifestyle of the occupants and the style of the house. Choices of furniture styles are endless from old English to retro.
Avoid cluttering the entryway as this is a high traffic area and to leave ample space for movement. The furniture should not block the front door keep in mind that it is an exit.
Accessories
Display your collectables, artwork and family photos on the wall above the console. If possible, choose one of a kind pieces to display. Using a mirror can have a double effect. It would add sparkle to the area and secondly make the room feel bigger.
