Corridor communities stage march against crime
Hundreds of Mount Lambert and Mount Hope residents yesterday staged a march against crime. It started at the Croisee in San Juan around 9 am and ended at the Mount Lambert Community Centre. The march was organised by Rev Desmond Jessop of the Mt Hope Worship Tabernacle. Jessop told Sunday Newsday he and members of his congregation decided to stage the march because of the increase in criminal activity in the community and the increase in the number of young persons affected by the ravages of drug addiction.
He said early yesterday, a drug addict had died in an abandoned house close to the community centre. Jessop felt that the situation could worsen, if the authorities, the church, the non governmental organisations and even the communities did not intervene and assist the troubled young people. Theme of the march was, “Save Our Communities.” At the end of the march, several discussions were held with a view of finding solutions to the crime problem. Entertainment was provided by a deejay and members of the Mt Hope community who displayed their skills in singing and dancing.
