Call for new Aranjuez bridge

THE Aranjuez Village Council, headed by Bissoon Birsingh, is repeating its call on the Ministry of Works and Transport to build a “real bridge” over the Aranjuez River, near the Aranjuez Villas. Birsingh said the bridge over the river is a threat to the safety of both residents and vehicular traffic. Sometime last year, the bridge collapsed and a bailey bridge was put up as a temporary measure. He said the Ministry of Works, through its Communications Department, had said the bridge would be replaced by October 2004. According to Birsingh however, “This was just word of mouth.” He had suggested that policemen direct traffic on mornings and afternoons to facilitate both motorists and schoolchildren, but it was a short-lived exercise on the part of the authorities.
