Historic Olympic debut for TT gymnast

Dick ended the qualification round with a score of 50.832 after competing in the balance beam, floor, vault and uneven bars. She finished in 42nd place overall out of the 48 athletes that started the event, and did not advance to the finals which takes place on Thursday.

Dick’s best showing came in the vault when she scored 13.900.

Dick scored 13.066 on the balance beam and 12.533 on the floor.

The Canadian-born gymnast, who qualified to represent TT because of her Trinidadian mother, struggled on the uneven bars which saw her finish with a score of 11.333.

Toni-Ann Williams also created history in the sport, becoming the first gymnast to represent Jamaica at the Olympics. Williams finished in 41st place after ending the women’s individual allaround competition with a score of 50.966. The United States dominated the qualification event with Simone Biles (62.366), Aly Raisman (60.607) and Gabby Douglas (60.131) snatching the top three spots.

National rower Aisha Chow was unable to compete in the repechage one of the 2000-metre women’s single sculls event yesterday.

The event was postponed due to the choppy waters at the Lagoa Stadium in Rio.

Chow will now compete in lane one from 9 am today (TT time) in repechage one alongside Amina Rouba of Algeria (lane two), Mahsa Javar of Iran (lane three), Camila Valle Granados of Peru (lane four) and Emily Morley of Bahamas (lane five). Chow, who is the first rower from TT to compete in the Olympics, will need to finish in the top two to advance to the quarterfinal round.

On Saturday Chow missed out on an automatic place in the quarterfinals after finishing fifth among the five competitors in heat six in eight minutes and 31.83 seconds (8:31.83). Chow needed to finish in the top three.

Today national sailor Andrew Lewis will compete in the opening race of the men’s laser (dinghy) category from 12.05 pm. Lewis also represented TT at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Tomorrow swimmer Dylan Carter will make his debut for TT at the Olympics. Carter will swim in the men’s 100m freestyle heats which begins at 12.02 pm.
