Paramount speeds away with 2016 Carib Great Race

Also in winners row was one of the three Tobago entries, Limitless, in the G-class 60 miles per hour.

Viewed as one of the boats to challenge perennial favourite Mr Solo and, in the absence of last year’s winner – Total Monster, Team Paramount lived up to the pre-great race hype and delivered a victory.

Competing in the A-class 130 mph category, alongside Mr Solo and Vortex, Paramount was the first boat to cross the finish point in front of the Esplanade at the Scarborough Port. It was the first victory for Paramount and its crew which has been racing for the past five years. The crew included driver Jason Laing, navigator Patrick Balgobin and throttleman Donald Webster.

Following Paramount into second spot was another A-class competitor, Mr Solo II.

In the D-class, 95 mph, Sheriff Lobo was the only competitor and it was third overall. Its driver was Brent Branker and the throttleman was Shameel Mohammed.

In the E-class, 80 mph, was Outlaw with its driver Michael Ross and Throttleman Jason Ross. It was followed by the boat White Heat driven by Victor Tardieu, navigator Robert Tardieu and throttleman Richard Tardieu.

Third in that class was Energiza with its driver Sheldon Edghill and throttleman Anthony Brash.

The race began in front of the Foreshore lookout, off the Audrey Jeffers Highway, in Cocorite. The course covered a distance of 102.5 nautical miles for the boats in the A, B, C and D classes.

In the E- class, the distance covered was 97.5 nautical miles and for the F and G classes, the distance was 80.5 nautical miles.

The boats in the G class, 60 mph, got the 2016 edition of the Great Race off just around 7.45 am yesterday, followed by all the other classes.
