Santa Rosa captures CYC Shepard’s Cup

The competition involved the top two teams from each vicariate; Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western and Central, along with the inclusion of the top two 3rd placed teams from each zone, to comprise a tournament of 12 teams. The participating teams were chosen based on results of previously concluded round robin tournaments, which took place in each zone, prior to the Shepard’s Cup. The competition was previously held in South and St Augustine and next year’s finals would be in the nation’s capital.

Denise Scott, Central Vicariate Coordinator, stated, “The programme is geared towards bringing young men together through sport and the rules and gameplay regulations follows that of futsal tournaments.” However, there was one major difference in this tournament as each team must provide a female player on the field of play at all times, which meant two female players were always in the midst of the action.

The Group Stages were dominated by San Juan RC, San Rafael RC & Mon Repos RC who each topped their groups respectively.

Surprisingly, the day’s finalist were La Brea RC and Santa Rosa, as neither of two of the teams topped the initial group stages.

La Brea almost looked like eventual winners as they played with a comfortable 2-0 lead early on but Santa Rosa reduced the deficit just before the end of the first half. The dismissal of La Brea’s Tevin Wildman made the task even harder for his teammates to hold their lead, after he was sent off following a second yellow for a sliding tackle.

Santa Rosa were motivated and searched even harder for an equalizer which they eventually got through the strike of tournament’s male MVP, Micah Clarke, in the final minute. The game then ended in a 2-2 draw and resulted in Santa Rosa winning 5-4 on penalties.
