Gasparillo man to pay mother for breaking pots

Ardis Sookram was given one day to compensate his mother, Gail Deonarine, for the two broken pots which he broke at their Gasparillo home on September 10.

Magistrate Natalie Diop, sitting in the San Fernando Fourth Magistrates Court, was told that at around 9.30am, Deonarine was at home when she witnessed Sookram pick up the pots and smash them on the ground. He then picked up a glass cooking pot and also threw it on the floor.

Sookram was represented by attorney Annalee Girwar, who described the incident as an “unfortunate circumstance” as there was poor communication between the mother and her son. She said Sookram, a mechanic, has since sought to change his ways while an aunt who lives at Parforce Road, Gasparillo has offered Sookram to stay by her in order to maintain some distance between her client and his mother.

Diop said while the incident could be described as “minor” in terms of criminal offences, she could not simply reprimand and discharge Sookram and ordered him to also pay $500 or spend 30 days in jail. He was given two days in which to pay the fine.
