Life in India not like Bollywood

The young citizen who went to India on a scholarship must be terribly disappointed at the living conditions she found there. India with its teeming millions is a place known to be full of extremities.

The very rich and the very poor.

Nowhere in the accommodation at UWI or the homes providing student accommodation in St Augustine and environs would there be the poor hostel conditions as described.

The young woman obviously comes from a home with all the modern amenities that we take for granted.

Initiation for me in England was most pleasant as the nurses hostels were always warm. My first ever hostel sister bent over backwards to make me feel comfortable.

My fellow Trini student and myself were offered extra bottles of milk when they saw that we could not immediately adjust to the bland food. Let’s just say nothing had enough pepper.

Full marks to the Indian High Commission for facilitating a quick return of the young woman to TT and her family. India is struggling with a record of numerous attacks on females on public transport and it was necessary to take charge of her safe return.

We need to be reminded that the Bollywood movies we view do not portray/reflect real life in modern India. Perhaps a male student could manage to “rough” it under those conditions but not a young woman accustomed to a modern home in TT .
