TT Paralympic team returns home today

Trinidad and Tobago finished 56th overall on the medal standings with three medals - two from Stewart (gold in the men’s F43/F44 javelin and silver in the men’s F43/F44 discus) and the other from Cain (bronze in the women’s T43/T44 100 metres sprint).

Yesterday, the Ministry of Sport issued a media release heaping praises on Cain for her accomplishment on Saturday evening.

Minister of Sport Darryl Smith was quoted in the media release as saying, “we are extremely proud of Nyoshia becoming only the second woman to medal after 32 years and the only medallist in track events. She is a talented athlete who is working hard at improving with each competition.” The Minister continued, “it’s clear that her preparation with the sport performance team at the Sport Company’s Elite Gym at the Hasely Crawford Stadium has been beneficial and reaped the desired results. We congratulate Nyoshia on her achievement!” President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTO C), Brian Lewis, in an interview on Saturday night, noted, “overall, I continue to look at the Rio 2016 campaign, both the Summer Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in one. I’m tremendously proud of all our athletes who participated at (both) Games. They gave their all and it’s now about moving forward to Tokyo 2020, and taking on board the lessons that we have to take and making the improvements.” Lewis added, “I think we have to adopt an approach where we look at all the elements that go into supporting our athletes and the process to get their full potential. We have to improve each component by one percent.

“We would be really able to improve and transform the performances of our athletes, who have basically been doing it in spite of, rather than because of,” ended the TTO C head.
