Cazabon museum needed

While the Government has in some quarters been criticised for the money spent in purchasing these important works of art by one of our most treasured sons of the soil, my own reaction is that not only was it money well spent, but these acquisitions should be regarded as just the start towards a permanent national Cazabon museum.

In my view this country, utilising both public and private funds, should seek to repatriate as many Cazabon works as possible, either by purchase or permanent loan arrangements, and house these in a new dramatic, landmark building the Cazabon museum.

This major building, which should of course be designed by local architects, should make a bold statement, such that it becomes a must-visit museum for art lovers from all over the world.

In terms of impact, I am thinking about the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain, for instance.

While the principal collection in the museum would of course be the works of Cazabon, there could certainly be numerous galleries for the display of the works of other renowned TT artists, in both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions.

And where might this wonderful new museum be located? The answer is obvious: on the site of the former Ministry of Agriculture adjacent to St Clair Circle, where instead of another international hotel, the Cazabon museum would become the dramatic, triumphant finale to the “Magnificent Seven” lining the Queen’s Park Savannah.

I have a dream…
