Campbell excited about Jumpstart Academy
Campbell, along with seven other aspiring basketballers travelled to the British Virgin Islands yesterday for the Academy along with counterparts from other participating Digicel markets.
Campbell took part in the local leg of the Digicel Jumpstart Clinic last month under the watchful eyes of NBA coaches Troy Justice and Lloyd Pierce and was selected out of a group of 40 male and 20 female local basketballers to take part in the 2016 Jumpstart Academy.
The other successful local basketball players in the BVI are Remy Brewer, Adam Tang Nian, Joshua Sheppard, Nicolai Mills, Kalique Robertson-Forrester, Jerryn Donald and Shania Emmanuel. The Academy takes place from October 7 – 9.
Campbell, 16-yearsold, is a student of the Pointe-a-Pierre Government Special School and has been playing basketball for five years.
She says it was through her coach at the school that she got involved in basketball and also credits her parents for motivating her.
“My father inspires me and pushes me to do well in the game,” she said.
Campbell, a sports fanatic, also travelled to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics World Summer Games last year as part of the Basketball contingent where the team walked away with a bronze medal. She will also take part in the upcoming World Winter Games in Austria next year as part of the Floor Hockey contingent.
In preparing for her stint at the Digicel Jumpstart Academy, the teen stated: “I train everyday for one hour after school.” At the Academy, Campbell hopes to “learn a lot of new things” and “learn how to pivot better.”
