Garcia: UWI will build Debe campus

“The Government has asked The University of the West Indies to complete this key developmental project but has not provided the required funding of some $50 million,” Moonilal, in a media release, stated yesterday, adding the university would be “hard-pressed to complete construction of the campus in the near future.”

However, Education Minister Anthony Garcia said Government was “confident that the university is going to look at how best they are going to apply their resources to ensure the completion of that project.”

“The Debe South campus is the responsibility of the University of the West Indies and this government has left it in the hands of the University of the West Indies,” Garcia said yesterday .

But Moonilal stated taxpayers must now ask whether this decision “is a political guise to terminate the works and to scrap the project after almost $400 million has been spent.”
