Questions to consider on Lara Stadium

He pointed out that although prior to 2010 the PNM Government had spent many millions of dollars on the unfinished structure, the People’s Partnership government (2010-2015) did not spend one cent to attempt to complete the facility, preferring instead to let it rot.

He said also that with its return to Government, the PNM is determined to complete the facility and put it to use so that in the future it will become one of the country’s better sporting facilities.

Did the PNM get the consent of Brian Charles Lara before naming the facility? If not it should and it must consider that it is not honouring Lara but celebrating the greatest batsman in the history of cricket from its earliest time to the present and unforeseeable future.

He has broken the record for most runs scored in a Test innings not once but twice. The record is now 400 runs and since it was established no batsman have even come close. What does that mean? To be worthy of such a name the facility must be of the highest international standard, eg the Queen’s Park Oval. It must have adequate staff to maintain it and must be fully equipped with all modern facilities so that it can be certified fit for Test cricket by the International Cricket Council.

Now where will the Government get the money to equip, staff and maintain such a facility? Certainly not Test or first class cricket or from membership fees or monthly subscriptions. Of course there are always wealthy patrons and the private sector.

Has the Prime Minister given thought to those things?
