Carter lowers national 50m butterfly record in semi

Carter smashed into the wall to finish second, in heat two of the 50-metre butterfly semifinals, with a new national mark of 22.53 seconds.

On Friday, in the preliminary round, he established a new national record of 22.85 seconds, erasing the previous 50 fly record set in 2014 by Joshua Mc Leod (23.08). He also broke the 200m freestyle national record twice in as many swims during the championships.

Tom Shields of the United States held off Carter to finish in a time of 22.38 seconds.

Carter touched the wall ahead of Russia’s Alexsandr Popkov, who registered a time of 22.69 seconds, Ukraine’s Andril Govorov with a time of 22.70 seconds and Albert Subirats of Venezuela who clocked 22.76 seconds.

Five persons from semifinal heat two advanced to the final, as well as three from heat one . Chad Le Clos of South Africa won heat one in 22.41 seconds, ahead of Australia’s David Morgan (22.62) and Japan’s Takeshi Kawamoto (22.74).

The 50m butterfly final was scheduled for 8.10 pm yesterday and Carter represented Trinidad and Tobago out of lane three.
