Mikal the young marac champion

Mikal Primus is a champion in the making, just ten years old, the Rosary Boys’ RC student has already won two prizes for the Best Marac Player for this year. Mikal and his fellow students — Los Paranderoes de Rosary sang their way to the second spot in the Junior Parang Festival recently. He was adjudged the best marac player in the competition.

The group also took part in the Tunapuna Lions competition and there Mikal took the title of Best Marac player again. Mikal says he has been singing parang for three years but started playing the marac this year and from the way he “shakes” his instrument it is clear that he has a “knack” for it. Photographer Gary Cardinez captured the young marac champion in action on the Brian Lara promenade last Tuesday as the group appeared on Gayelle TV.
