Shuttle Force earn clean sweep of titles at Solo Badminton

If there were any doubts that their performance was a stroke of luck, the Valencia- based club quickly laid that to rest by again making a clean sweep and adding yet another title to their name at the Solo Open Championships last month at the Chaguanas Regional Indoor Sporting Arena. Derwin Renales, the Club’s coach, teamed up with Ronald Clarke, a former national doubles champion, to take the Masters title for the second straight year.

Both Alistair Espinoza and Solangel Guzman claimed the Men’s and Women’s singles titles respectively from their club mates, Jada Renales and Will Lee.

Of the six titles up for grabs, Shuttle Force competed amongst themselves in three events.

Guzman defeated Jada Renales for the Women’s singles crown, but they then teamed up for the Women’s doubles and outplayed the duo of Leannna Castanada and Latoya Waldron in the gold medal match.

In similar fashion, national champ Espinoza dethroned Lee, the 2016 men’s singles winner. However, they combined to trounced Naim Mohammed and Sheraz Nabbie in the Men’s doubles.

The Under-17 Female Junior Cham; Chequeda De Boulet paired with Lee for the Mixed doubles event, but they were defeated by the pair of Jada Renales and Espinoza in an exciting game.

At the end of the night, Espinoza had three titles to his name, with Guzman and Jada Renales having two apiece and Lee one.

De Boulet was awarded the Spirit of Sport Award for her performance throughout the tournament as a junior, and both singles winners additionally received the Trevor Smith and Debra O’Connor challenge trophies respectively.

The other players medalling from Shuttle Force were junior players Nathaniel Khillawan and Ralitsa Wong.
