Eddie Hart praises CEPEP workers

MEMBER for Tunapuna Eddie Hart has praised CEPEP workers for the way they have carried out their duties in his constituency. At the same time, while addressing workers who belong to the “Debut” gang, Hart urged them to continue the good work in the environment. “Clean it, beautify it, enhance it and so hold it in trust for many generations to come. It is either we accept that responsibility as a covenant to the future, or wallow forever in a cesspool of filth in which life itself can very quickly become untenable,” he said. Hart told his large audience at the Centre of Excellence last Saturday night that in a changing world, jobs were no longer guaranteed for life. “People have to think now about creating their own means of living, and that is what CEPEP is all about. “A whole new work culture is being instilled. It is a new work culture that shall leave behind the old URP mentality for good, because the CEPEP programme seeks to make each and everyone a responsible citizen,” said Hart.

He advised workers who are employed by contractors that they themselves should seek to become contractors, and so spread the management skills. “We advise you to tender for everything that falls within your ambit. We say remove your fears and go forward bravely. A whole new world awaits you,” said Hart. Noting that all over the world the same battle was being fought for the preservation of the environment, Hart referred to Madame Wangari Maathai, the 64-year-old African woman who won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. She won the prize for her efforts over a 30-year period as leader of the Green Belt Movement, through which 30 million trees were planted with women being empowered at community level to be in the vanguard of environmental preservation. “Her story should be a guiding light to us all,” said Hart. He also praised the CEPEP workers who assisted in Grenada after the onslaught of Hurricane Ivan earlier this year.
