Wilson wins thrilling Solo final
In a very close women’s finals, teenager Brittany Joseph (WASA) beat 37 year old Aleena Edwards (UTT) by four games to one. Joseph took a close opening game 14-12 but Edwards roared back 13-15 to level the contest.
Joseph, however, reeled off three straight tight wins 11-9, 11-7, 11-9 to clinch the title.
The men’s final was even more exciting and was dubbed as one of the best in several years. Aaron Wilson (BLA), 19, came from three games down to defeat 32 year old Curtis Humphreys (WASA) in a pulsating encounter that will be etched into the memory of all who were present to witness it.
Wilson, who trained in Spain recently and is headed to Germany later this year, found himself in trouble early after losing the first two games 8-11, 8-11.
And when Humphreys brushed him aside 4-11 in the third, the title looked all but decided.
But Wilson’s training abroad came in handy, rallying to take the next three games 11-3, 12-10, 11-7 to get back into the match and force a decisive seventh game. With the momentum his way, the teen completed a stunning comeback 15-13 to clinch the title. Earlier that evening in the women’s semi-final rounds, Joseph beat Catherine Spicer (POW), while Edwards beat Linda Partap (Hawks).
The men’s quarter-finals were also played earlier with Wilson beating Yuuvraj Dookram (WASA), Humphreys defeating Luc O’Young BLA), Arun Roopnarine (Hawks) getting past Joshua Maxwell (BLA), and Reeza Burke (Hawks) beating Franklyn Seechan (WASA). In the men’s semis Wilson beat Burke, while Humpheys beat Roopnarine.
