Unease over Jai Court play park
This included the erection of a fence with gates and opening and closing hours.
“Our house is one of the houses that is adjacent to the park.
The owner from one of the other houses has put up a wall already.
We moved in on December 2015 and we were part of a community initiative to organise the play park.
“We formed a community group and solicited the help from Digicel Foundation to put down the play park. My husband and I were in full support of the park with control measures being put in place.
One of the control measures is that the west of the perimeter of the park there should be a fence with a gate to have opening and closing hours because we were hearing that the park was not only for our community, but also for the Brazil/ Talparo community which lends a security issue.
Without having the park fenced, anybody could come in and make that a liming spot at two or three in the morning, and also vandalise the equipment,” she said.
Williams said without there being a front barrier children could run out into the road. A rear barrier would close off a drain which also posed a risk to children.
She said the community group said they had approached Self Help for funds to help put up the fence, and residents also paid dues towards it.
Each household was asked to voluntarily pay dues which were $50 every quarter.
“We held an emergency meeting on Wednesday (last) where they said they are committed to building the fence, but they are also stating that they are going to open the park Saturday.
My concern is that they are opening the park without the control measures.
Also, the fact that my property is adjacent to it, anybody can come in at any point in time and do my family harm because in this country now, you know we have a situation with crime.
“They have made pits which have gravel and decorative stones in them.
“No one cannot answer me as to who would be liable if somebody breaks my window.
The committee is saying they do not have the money and that they have a contractual agreement with Digicel to open the park within a particular time,” Williams said. The couple is seeking legal advice on the matter.
Several attempts to contact vice president of the committee Anna Lisa Stewart went straight to voice mail, and messages were not returned.
