Regrello assures return of commerce to Mucurapo Street
Several days into the implementation of changes in the flow of traffic and relocation of problematic taxi stands, owners of businesses that line the upper half of Mucurapo Street, San Fernando complained that the decreased traffic around Library Corner also inadvertently led to decreased sales in their stores as the travelling public is now being diverted to High Street.
“What happened there on Mucurapo Street is we removed the Marabella stand to put it on Pointe-a-Pierre Road side so there was no taxi presence there, so they would have had a decrease in traffic,” Regrello explained in an interview with the Newsday.
“But we have put the Diamond taxis there now. So they will start there from tomorrow so there would be a presence of people and activity in the area. There are other plans we are working on to bring more activity in the area and I want to give you that assurance.” The Diamond Village taxi stand is expected to be on the city-end of Mucurapo Street from yesterday.
Another change implemented within the last week was the change in traffic flow on Short Street, San Fernando.
The changes have since decreased traffic and has also left a small part of the roadway blocked off between the corner of Library and High Street.
“And isn’t that exciting?” said Regrello. “In every city there should be a free space where you can do something impulsive, do something at the drop of the hat.
You could have street theatre there. You now have a space that is readily available to do anything with. But let us leave it as a space for now until somebody could come with a great idea as to how it could be used.” Regrello said that the traffic plans were the result of a very scientific approach, as they had people drive cars along the new routes during peak hours to time how long it took. As the days progress, Regrello said further changes would be made until an optimum solution is reached..”
