First ever Carnival show in Barrackpore
BARRACKPORE will come alive on Sunday with colour and lyrics country style when it stages the first ever Carnival show in the district. The residents have come together to stage three categories of Carnival presentations — mas’ bands, calypso and queen competitions. Noted for producing some of this country’s best chutney singing artistes, Barrackpore “calypsonians” should be worth taking a look at. Show organiser Kenneth Paulsingh, under his newly-formed Barrackpore Regional Carnival Committee, has mandated all contestants to perform a number of their choice. The second song must be orginally composed.
Paulsingh said six singers are listed to compete for prizes — $1,000 (first), $800 (second),$700 (third). There will be a parade of the bands which will be judged according to costumes, originality and the natural ability of masqueraders to display the art in the true spirit of Carnival. The events will be held at BJ Complex from 3 pm. Five bands have registered to compete. Winners will compete for $1,200 (first), $900 (second) and $700 (third). Additionally, from among six registered contestants will be crowned a Miss Barrackpore Queen. Judging in the category began Wednesday when the six contestants visited the St Vincent de Paul Society.
