Hundreds pay respects to late Bishop Mendes

THE late Bishop John Mendes was described yesterday by Father Clyde Harvey parish priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church, San Fernando, as a deeply compassionate man.

Fr Harvey made the comment as mourners paid their respects to the late Bishop during a public viewing at the San Fernando church.

Bishop Mendes, 79, Trinidad and Tobago’s first and only Auxiliary Bishop, died last Friday after a prolonged illness. At noon yesterday, Fr Harvey and Father Stephen Doyle, parish priest at Siparia, concelebrated Mass in memory of the late Bishop Mendes. Hundreds of people, including schoolchildren, attended the Mass.

Harvey said that the Bishop would be remembered for his down-to-earth attributes.

"He was an absolute human being with a great sense of humour," Harvey recalled.

Mendes was the official exorcist for the local RC church and, according to Fr Harvey, in that area of his ministry the late bishop touched the lives of many people who were facing the worst of circumstances.
