‘Blazer’ in court on murder charge

SOCA artiste Troyden Cruickshank, who sings under the sobriquet "Blazer," appeared in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with the murder of his elder brother, Dillon.

Cruickshank, singer of the 2004 hit "Stages," also sang the popular tune the year before, "Wrong Timing," appeared before Magistrate Maria Busby Earle Caddle in the First Magistrates’ Court.

Cruickshank, 26, of Myers Trace, Enterprise Village, Chaguanas, walked into Homicide Division in Port-of-Spain accompanied by his attorney Wayne Sturge on Monday night. Busby Earle Caddle read three charges to Cruickshank, which alleged that on Saturday July 23, he allegedly murdered his 28-year-old brother Dillon, he had a revolver in his possession, and that he also had ammunition in his possession.

Cruickshank was not called on to enter a plea to the three charges which were laid indictably.

Dillon died after he was shot in the head at his home at Myers Trace on Saturday, during an argument with relatives. According to police reports, an argument over money erupted between the accused and his father, David. Dillon was shot and was rushed to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Yesterday, Cruickshank’s mother turned up in court, along with several supporters of the soca artiste. Police tightened security measures outside the court, keeping persons away from the accused. One of Cruickshank’s fans threw a white jersey over the soca artiste’s head in an apparent attempt to shield him from media photographers.

Sturge asked the magistrate to assist in expediting the case. The magistrate advised the attorney to speak to the Director of Public Prosecutions because she would soon be proceeding on leave.

In an application to the court, Sturge asked for disclosure. Busby Earle Caddle remanded the accused into custody until August 5.
