Kidnappers want $2.5M for El Socorro teen

Kidnappers are demanding a $2.5 million ransom for the safe release of Nicholas Mahabir, 17, who was snatched metres away from his Sadoo Trace home in San Juan.

A man telephoned the home of Mahabir at 10 pm on Wednesday, and demanded the money.

The caller also told shocked relatives that the boy will be killed if the money is not paid.

Anti-Kidnapping Squad officers told Newsday yesterday that they are pursuing several leads.

Mahabir, the country’s 36th kidnap victim for ransom this year, was liming with friends at 9.30 on Tuesday night, when two masked gunmen pulled up to the broken shed where the boys were liming at Don Miguel Extension. They bundled Mahabir into the back seat of a waiting Nissan Sentra B-15 car.

The kidnapped teen’s father, William Mahabir, is an agent for Flavorite ice cream. He said he does not have the money to pay the ransom demanded.

Mahabir pleaded with the kidnappers to release his son unhurt. He believes the kidnapping is a case of mistaken identity.

Yesterday, relatives of the snatched teen gathered at his home awaiting word on Mahabir. Officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad were also seen at the premises. Six kidnap victims now remain unaccounted for. They are; Vijay Persad, Ravi Kalipersad Maharaj, Mark Prescott, Chris Elves, Preetam Singh and Nicholas Mahabir.

Investigations are continuing.
