Library launches centre for elderly

TO IMPROVE the quality of life for elderly persons in TT and to better facilitate their growing numbers, the Ministry of Social Development, Division of Ageing, formally launched the opening of its Older Persons Information Centre (OPIC) at the National Library yesterday.

The centre is intended to provide information about homes for the aged, refer users to medical equipment and services, to provide access to caregivers and to supply legislation related to the elderly. Elderly persons can access the relevant information by calling the toll free number 800-OPIC (6742).

According to Social Development Minister Anthony Roberts in his feature address, there are some 130,000 persons in TT who are over the age of 60. This figure, he stated, is expected to double to 260,000 by the year 2020, when TT is expected to achieve developed country status.

"The Government, in keeping with its Vision 2020, has put mechanisms in place to deal with the issues arising from an ageing population," said Roberts.

He added that the ministry is in the process of finalising a Draft National Policy on ageing as well as amendments to the Homes for Older Persons Act 2000. He said other programmes such as senior centres, assisted living facilities, meals-on-wheels, companion care and public education workshops will also be implemented.
