Govt dissociates itself from circulated draft Gender Policy
The Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ) yesterday complimented Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Patrick Manning for making it abundantly clear in his Budget speech that the draft Gender Policy document currently being circulated was not issued by the Government. The draft Gender Policy document raised the issue of abortion, something which the Catholic Church strongly opposes. Manning stated in the Budget that "there are certain recommendations in the document to which the Government does not and will not subscribe. The Government is therefore requesting that the document which purports to be official Government policy be withdrawn from circulation." The CCSJ said the statement was in accord with the CCSJ’s and the Emmanuel Community’s stand, which was communicated to the PM. "His words are particularly significant at a time when the need to strengthen family life in Trinidad and Tobago is more urgent than ever." The CCSJ stated that Government policy seeking to build a worthwhile and moral society must ensure that family life is protected, preserved and enhanced. Saying that the CCSJ had joined with others in vigorously opposing aspects of the draft National Gender Policy that contained blatant anti-family values, the CCSJ thanked the Prime Minister for his advocacy of a moral stand.
