CBTT supports call to remove rogue cops

The non-governmental organisation Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT) has come out in support of Sunday Newsday’s Editorial which called for the removal of the inefficient and rogue cops from the Police Service.

CBTT head Harrack Balramsingh pointed out that his organisation had been calling for years for the authorities to "deal with rogue cops" but to no avail.

He said, "Sunday Newsday is right in stating, ‘if police officers are corrupt, then crime in Trinidad and Tobago can never be contained.’"

He stated that the FBI and Scotland Yard would recognise the corrupt elements in the Police Service, "if they have not done so already. Let the FBI and Scotland Yard officers help the Government in weeding out corrupt police officers because we have not been able to do so."

He noted that the Sunday Newsday Editorial entitled, "Deal with rogue cops" reflected the views of the majority of citizens and must be taken seriously.

In reference to the President’s feature address at the opening of Parliament, Balramsingh said, "When the highest office expresses concern about crime, then we must act quickly to alleviate the fears of citizens." He mentioned that it was tragic when officers cause cases to be dismissed and are allowed to continue service.

"What is more scandalous? Persons charged are being dismissed because rogue cops are stealing the illegal drugs. Some officers suggest that rats have eaten the cocaine which proves we are having problems getting rid of rats among the police officers," he said.

Balramsingh is calling on the Government to remove those, "who have allowed the situation to reach this level, and replace them with those who want to change. Corrupt cops are hampering the good work of the Police Service and decent officers would do an exceptional job if they did not have to work with the corrupt cops. Some are afraid to investigate them for fear of victimisation or death." He added that recommendations of the Joint Select Committee be taken seriously. "Police are shooting police and it’s being passed as a mistake."

"Too many citizens are abused by rogue cops and it was time to take action against these officers and not always believe the police are right." The authorities should seriously consider the Sunday Newsday Editorial or face the consequences of more murders, kidnappings and other crimes.
