State closes kidnapping case
The State closed its case yesterday in the preliminary inquiry into kidnapping of psychologist Ronald John, who was kidnapped in 2003. Charged with the March 26, 2003, kidnapping are Sheldon "Skelly" Lovell, Sean "Gumbo" Vincent, Rondell Roberts, Rochard "Chinee" Kirton, and Brian Charles. All five men are on trial before Magistrate Ejenny Espinet at the Port-of-Spain First Court. Testifying in the matter yesterday was the State’s main witness, Joel Phillips, who is currently in protective custody. Phillips was led in evidence by attorney Nigel Pilgrim. Also giving evidence at the preliminary inquiry was complainant in the matter, Cpl Andrew Charles of the Carenage Police Station. Cross-examination was reserved by each of the five accused, who were yesterday unrepresented during the proceedings. Asked if their attorneys would be present on the next occasion, the accused told the magistrate arrangements would be made to have the attorneys present on the next occasion. Espinet then adjourned the matter to December 5, hoping that attorneys who decided to come forward would make closing submissions on their client’s behalf. The magistrate is expected to rule on the matter after the submissions.
