No bail for Dutchman on cocaine charge
A citizen of the Netherlands Antilles, who was allegedly held with a little more than four kilogrammes of liquid cocaine at Crown Point Airport last Friday evening, was denied bail when he appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Edsel Hubertus de Camps appeared before Senior Magistrate Annette McKenzie in the First Court charged by police with possession of 4.696 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He is also facing a Customs charge of attempting to export a prohibited substance. De Camps was reportedly held by members of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) in Tobago, in collaboration with customs preventive officers, as he was preparing to board a Martin Air flight to Amsterdam, Holland, about 8.15 pm on November 18. A mint-green plastic bag with two green plastic bottles and a white plastic bottle, each said to contain liquid cocaine, were presented to the court as exhibits in the case. The magistrate told the accused that the charges had been laid indictably and he was not being called on to plead. Prosecutor Sgt Willie Davis objected to bail on the grounds that the accused was a flight risk as he had no local address or connections in Tobago. De Camps was subsequently remanded in custody. He is to reappear in court on December 1.
