Fire leaves nine homeless

SEVEN children, including a five-month-old baby boy, along with their parents were on Saturday left homeless after a fire completely destroyed their house.

According to a fire report, at about 5.30 pm on Saturday, smoke was seen coming from a two-bedroom wooden and galvanised house at Palm Avenue, Esperanza Village, California, Couva.

The report stated that fire appliances, attached to the Couva Fire Station, responded within mere minutes but were unable to salvage anything.

The house was owned by Shawn Deabreu, 30, and Jassodra Hardial, 29. The two lived there with their seven children: Devika, 12, a student of the Miracle Ministries Pentecostal High School, Mc Bean, Couva; Mahindra, 11, and Kirindra, ten — students of the Esperanza Presbyterian School; Peter, seven; Raul, four; Sierra, two and five-month-old baby boy, Sanchez.

The report stated that no one was injured in the blaze. An estimate of the damage has not yet been revealed.

Yesterday when Newsday visited the scene, the now homeless children were seen playing in the ruins of their home. Little Raul, whose bicycle was destroyed in the blaze, stood in a daze and with tear-filled eyes said, "I wish I could have back my bike. I miss it."

A very distraught Hardial yesterday said that she was outside walking the baby, while her children were playing in the yard when the incident occurred. "While I was walking the baby, I just saw smoke coming from the bedroom. I called out to my husband who was in the kitchen cooking, to check it out, and he saw that the entire room was on fire," Hardial said.

"He tried to out it by bucket brigade but the flames took it over real fast. My eldest daughter was only able to save her school book bag which had her maths, geography and science books," she added.

Some of Hardial’s children are currently staying with a neighbour, while Hardial, her husband and her baby are staying by a relative.

Hardial pleaded with members of the public to help. "We lost everything and I am not working anywhere. My children lost their toys, school books, uniforms and clothes. I am begging please help us." Anyone wishing to help the family can contact Hardial at 636-2919.

Investigations are continuing.
