Cops hunt hit and run driver

BARATARIA police are tracking a motorist who knocked down a cyclist on the Priority Bus Route, San Juan, yesterday, drove over him and left him for dead.

According to reports, the unidentified man of East Indian descent was proceeding east along the PBR on the southern side of the road at 4.50 pm, when he collided head on with a car proceeding west. The car rolled over the man and bike, and then sped off.

Soldiers proceeding west in a vehicle stopped and tried to assist the injured man, while the hit and-run driver sped off. The EHS took the man who had sustained injuries to his head, chest and hand to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was warded in a critical condition up to press time. Eyewitnesses told Newsday that the man was in a nearby bus shed smoking a cigarette, after which he jumped on his bike and was riding east, when the car struck him, drove over him and then drove off. Eyewitnesses gave the police the licence plate number of the car, and police expect to make an arrest early next week.
