Boy, 12, killed in highway smash-up

A mother, Michelle Rewan, returned home to spend Christmas with her son, Chevron, 12, in Sangre Grande. But it was not to be.

Michelle took Chevron for a drive on Tuesday afternoon to visit his father in South Trinidad. On their way back home to Sangre Grande they were travelling on the Solomon Hochoy Highway when their car was involved in a two-car accident near the Preysal flyover. Chevron was killed in the crash.

He was seated in the front passenger seat of a rented yellow Nissan B-15 Sunny, which was driven by his mother, Michelle.

They were on the north-bound lane of the highway when the car picked up a skid. The accident occurred about half mile after the Preysal Flyover.

The report stated that Michelle lost control of the car which crossed the median and ended up on the south-bound lane.

The car then slammed into a grey Toyota Hilux driven by Rajkumar Deolal. The impact caused Chevron to be thrown out of the car. He died on the spot.

In the Hilux vehicle with Deolal, 38, were his wife, Patsy, and their two sons — Mark, 12, and Matthew, two, of Siparia Old Road, Avocat Village, Fyzabad. Mark was seated in the front seat, while Patsy was seated in the back with Matthew. Police said members of the Deolal family sustained minor injuries when Michelle’s car struck the Hilux.

The district’s medical officer, Dr Teelucksingh, visited the scene and ordered the body of the child removed to the San Fernando mortuary.

Michelle was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where she was treated and warded. The report stated that the Deolal family was treated at hospital and warded for observation.

Rewan was a student of the St Francis RC School, Sangre Grande. His neighbour, Brandon Daniel, 12, told Newsday yesterday that Rewan was a football lover who played with the Economy Supermarket Under-14 football team. Daniel said he had hoped to buy a pair of football boots for Rewan for Christmas, but he gave up the idea when the boy’s mother (Michelle) brought the boots for him from the US.

"I had planned to buy it for him, but when his mummy came from America she brought down a pair for him. He never got the chance to wear it. I will miss him. He was my buddy," Daniel said.

Cpl Bharat of the Couva Police Station is investigating.
