Fyzabad man commits suicide

AN employee of the National Transport Co-operative Society in San Fernando on Sunday succumbed to a poisonous substance he ingested two days ago. According to a police report, Shannon Sheerwood, 37, of Premier Crescent, Fyzabad, locked himself in the bedroom at his home after an argument with his wife, Joyce, 35. The report stated that Joyce, a clerk employed at the law office of Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, told police that she returned home at 6 pm on December 30, when a domestic quarrel broke out between herself and her husband. Sheerwood, the report stated, walked away, but returned a short while later with a bottle of Herbiquat — a herbicide.

The report stated that Sheerwood went to the bedroom, locked himself in and consumed the deadly substance. Police said Joyce called out to a neighbour who broke down the door to the room. Sheerwood, frothing from his mouth, was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital via an EHS ambulance. He was treated and warded, but succumbed to the poison on Sunday afternoon. Cpl Ashford of the Fyzabad Police Station is investigating.
