Tobago youth just out of jail, sent back for two years

A Tobago youth who was recently released from jail, was on Thursday sent back for two years with hard labour after he was caught red-handed by neighbours trying to break into the home of a man at Patience Hill, near Scarborough, the previous day.

Kevin Henry, 20, of Patience Hill, was sentenced by Senior Magistrate Annette McKenzie in the Scarbor-ough First Court. He was charged with attempting to break into Leo Cruickshank’s home with intent to commit an arrestable offence — to steal. Charges in the matter were laid by Detective Alicia Piggott, of Old Grange Police Station. Henry pleaded guilty.

The court heard that Henry had one previous conviction for a similar offence — for which he was jailed for six months with hard labour in May last year. Henry admitted that "is true" he was trying to break into Cruickshank’s home at Winchester Trace, Patience Hill, on January 4, but was seen by a man. When he attempted to flee, he was held by a group of villagers and later handed over to the police.

The court heard that Cruickshank secured his home around 7.30 am, and returned at 4.45 pm, only to discover that his key was unable to fit the door lock as it had been tampered with. The police were alerted and, while on inquiries in the area, Henry was handed over to the lawmen by residents.

Meanwhile, on a separate charge of breaking into the home of another villager Norman George on December 14, Henry pleaded not guilty and was granted $30,000 bail with surety that must meet the approval of the Clerk of the Peace. He is to reappear in court on January 26.
