Murder victim’s family calls for justice
Relatives of murdered kidnap victim Balram "Balo" Maharaj yesterday heaped praise on Homicide officers and six officers of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) who worked relentlessly to bring closure to the probe into Maharaj’s disappearance. On Friday, six FBI officers who have been working closely with Homicide officers on Maharaj’s kidnapping accompanied officers to Santa Cruz where the search for the remains of Maharaj took place. Officers returned to Grand Curacaye in Santa Cruz on Sunday where they found Maharaj’s mutilated body chopped in pieces and concealed in two containers. The remains were removed to the Forensic Science Centre, and an autopsy will be performed today. Two men and a 34-year-old woman detained by the police in connection with the murder and kidnapping are expected to be charged today. At Chandee Lanc, El Socorro, where Maharaj’s relatives reside, his mother Baby John sobbed uncontrollably as she grappled to come to terms with the gruesome murder of her son. She described her son as a warm kind and humble person who did not deserve to die such a horrible death. John had been praying since April 6 last year for her son to be released from his abductors. She always believed he was still alive, but those hopes were dashed on Sunday night with the news of her son’s death. John is being closely monitored by relatives who now fear that the grief may affect the 80-year-old woman’s health Angie John, a relative of Maharaj, told Newsday she is hoping that the people responsible for the kidnapping and murder are brought to justice. Maharaj was at the Samaan Tree Bar, Aranjuez, on April 6, when he was approached by three men who said: "is you we come for." The three men dragged Maharaj to a Mitsubishi Lancer car and drove off.
