Two bandits held after high-speed chase


TWO bandits were held by police following a high-speed chase along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway yesterday ending on the eastern side of Food Giant Supermarket, Maritime Plaza, Bara-taria.


According to reports at about 4.45 pm two men hired a taxi being driven by Malcolm Noel in Port-of-Spain en route to San Juan.


On reaching the Beetham Highway in the area of the landfill one of the men an-nounced a hold-up and placed a gun to the driver’s neck.


The driver drove for a while and on seeing a motorbike officer in his rearview mirror he started swerving his car dangerously in and out of traffic gaining the officer’s attention.


The driver eventually banked the taxi opposite the mall on the Lady Young Extension Road where the motorbike officer held one of the men.


Officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force, the Guard and Emergency Branch, and the North-Eastern Division Task Force including Cpl Les-Pierre and PCs Mundoo, Robinson and others quickly cordoned off the area and held the second bandit hiding in a drain opposite the mall.


The men, ages 24 and 28, both of Diego Martin were quickly arrested and are currently being interrogated.


At press time police were still in the area awaiting the arrival of the police dogs to search for the gun used in the attempted robbery.


In an unrelated matter Barataria police are investigating a stabbing incident involving a student at an unnamed school.
