MND claims construction bobol

THE MOVEMENT For National Development (MND) yesterday claimed that there is rampant corruption taking place in the local construction sector with favouritism being shown to a few local contractors and foreign contractors on several projects which are currently in train.

In a statement, MND political leader Garvin Nicholas accused Government of turning a blind eye to alleged "questionable practices" in the construction sector and claimed that "party affiliation and expediency contribute in no small way" to the allocation of construction contracts. Nicholas said these alleged practices and recent statements by Works and Transport Minister Colm Imbert appear to suggest that more foreign contractors will be coming to Trinidad and Tobago "at the expense of locals once again" and that the economy is overheating in the construction sector.

"The MND calls upon the Government to stop its proliferation of a select group of local and foreign consultants and contractors that have become the true beneficiaries of the nation’s good fortune," he said. Nicholas called on Govern-ment to investigate all allegations of questionable practices in the construction sector and particularly investigate major contracts involving the proposed $15 billion mass transit system, road rehabilitation, highway expansion and the $15 billion Port-of-Spain waterfront project.

He further urged Govern-ment to allocate "no less than 30 percent of all government construction contracts" to small construction companies so that the nation’s wealth can be enjoyed by a greater percentage of TT nationals.
