Sound Specialists honours Destra

FOR the second time in six months, soca siren Destra Garcia will be honoured by a Laventille-based pan organisation. Conventional steel orchestra Courts Sound Specialists, which hails from Eastern Quarry Laventille, is the outfit.

In tribute to Garcia — the lone vocalist with soca band Atlantik — Sound Specialists will play a musical tribute to the female entertainer, when the band delivers its arrangement of "Colours Again" at this year’s National Panorama Competition staged by Pan Trinbago in February. The band will appear in the medium category.

Mark Loquan composed the song, which Garcia vocalised. The Panorama arrangement of this musical item, for Sound Specialists, is being worked on by Ken "Professor" Philmore.

In August 2005, Garcia, of Laventille, was honoured by a community-based organisation called the Laventille Steelband Festival Committee at its staging of the Laventille Steelband Festival Parade. At that event, Garcia’s award was for her contribution to the development of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture. Sound Specialists participated at that festival and now the band’s executive is seeking to continue feting the hometown girl, straight into the "Big Yard" (Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain).
