Sunshine Snacks Carnival awash with colour

Crime and the blazing sun were no deterrents as teens, toddlers, and even babes in arms and prams donned costumes and took to the streets of Port-of-Spain during yesterday’s Sunshine Snacks Junior Carnival parade of the bands. South Quay, one of the judging points, was awash with colour, as the children paraded their costumes before the judges and spectators, who lined the streets.

With costumes ranging from clowns, jokers, firemen and Zulus, to the more traditional jab jab, Perrot Grenade, fancy Indian, midnight robber and king sailor, the youngsters performed their simple choreographed dance routines for the judges, and much to the delight of photographers. While costume designers used a variety of colours in their depiction of myths, legends and fairy tales, white, reds and greens seemed to be the more popular colours. “Lilliput Flew”, “Dragon”, “Feather Fancy Sailors”, “Mas Mas ah know yuh name”, “Success”, “Boissiere” and “Caribbean Brass Festival” were among some of the names of the bands competing in this year’s competition.
