NCBA honours traditional mas

The awards were in recognition of the support and contribution by the players with respect to the revitalisation of traditional mas.

Several long-standing players in categories like Dame Lorraine, Pierrot Grenade, Authentic Indians, Bats, Midnight Robber and Devils were present at the function. Digicel’s CEO Stephen Brewer told the audience he had a wonderful time and is now the proud owner of a Fancy Sailor Suit and can’t wait to put it on to play mas. He also said it was a learning experience and traditional mas must be taught to the youths for they are the future.

“I prefer, to say ‘traditional’ as opposed to ‘nostalgic’ as ‘traditional’ has much stronger value,” said Brewer.

Minister in the Ministry of Culture Edward Hart, who was filling in for Culture Minister Joan Yuille-Williams, said he was pleased with the revival of the traditional mas and the involvement of the youths .

“With a decentralised Carnival, people all over Trinidad and Tobago are helping to restore our Carnival to its glory days,” said Hart.
