Camacho set to make return
The Guyanese was named yesterday as the frontrunner to take up the position vacated by Roger Brathwaite who announced his resignation on Friday.
This was one of the major points of dicussion when the WICB met on Friday at their headquarters in Antigua. The meeting was attended by all the directors of the various territories — 12 in all with two representatives each from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Leeward Islands and Windward Islands.
There are also four Auxiliary Members who were proposed at the last meeting by WICB President Kenneth Gordon — billionaire American businessman Allen Stanford, former WI captain Clive Lloyd, Sir Allister McIntyre and Dr Glenville Phillips. Chief Executive Officer Braithwaite’s future was discussed in detail and his resignation was accepted but his last day on the job will be April 28.
“It was not easy for Braithwaite as he has given a lot of years for West Indies cricket, but his style of management clashed with the current executive. He looked a sad man when he was given the final verdict on Friday,” said a source close to the WICB in Antigua.
But the major disclosure concerned former Test opening batsman Camacho who was touted as the new Acting Chief Executive Officer from May 1.
Camacho resigned due to illness in the 1990s and was reported to have taken up residence in Florida, USA.
He is believed to be interested in his old portfolio although weary of the burden of the job in the present scenario based on his previous experience.
“It was a surprise to many when Stephen Comacho’s name was raised but it seems that this plan was already conceived before the meeting, and there was a lot of agreement on him because his knowledge and wide experience is acknowledged by many,” the source said.
Another plan involved Lloyd assuming the role of Chief Operations Officer in charge of cricket. This job will give him direct responsibility over all cricket matters including current coach Bennett King and his ancillary staff.
“This ultimately means that Clive Lloyd will be the main man in West Indies cricket in terms of the control of all cricket affairs thereby reducing the role and responsibility of the new CEO.
Also King will now have to report to Lloyd, a man who knows a lot about cricket and who will not stand for any nonsense.
So King and his team will have some pressure on them at last,” the WICB source indicated.
