Back to school at Sacred Heart

Students had fallen ill from a pigeon infestation, and parents, children and teachers protested and forced the closure of the school last month, as many complained that the pigeon droppings were causing students and the cleaners at the school to fall ill.

Parents said children complained of vomiting, while others were diagnosed with lung problems.

Work on the school was done during the last two weeks, and the school was pigeon-proofed and cleaned, while other work was done to ensure there were no reoccurrences of pigeon-perching, nesting or pigeon droppings.

A representative at the school told Newsday all the students turned out for classes, and all was well for now at the institution, even though one or two pigeons were still observed at the compound. Communications Officer at the Ministry of Education, Mervyn Crichlow, told Newsday the school had been cleaned and the various work was done to prevent pigeons and bats from entering the school.
