Imbert: Breathalyser coming

The bill, he said, would empower the police to demand samples of the breath and possibly also the blood of persons suspected of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The bill also lets the police test a person involved in a traffic accident.

A conviction under this law, he said, could result in disqualification of a driver. Anyone refusing to comply with the breathalyser, he said, could be punished by a fine and, or, imprisonment.

The bill will require a special majority of Parliament, said Imbert, but he said the Opposition and Government had previously agreed to back the bill.
