2nd High-Speed wireless system —
LOCAL telecom provider TSTT on Wednesday last, announced the availability of a new high speed mobile data service on its GSM network. With the activation of EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), TSTT said it has become the first mobile service provider in the region to offer customers service on two independent high speed mobile data networks — EDGE for GSM users and EVDO for CDMA users.
This is a significant milestone not only for TSTT but also for Trinidad and Tobago. The launch of TSTT’s EVDO high speed mobile data service last October and now EDGE, puts the country at the forefront of mobile communications technology worldwide. EDGE enables compatible mobile devices to browse the Internet and corporate networks at higher data rates. It is to mobile handsets what ADSL is to fixed lines and is along the migration path to TSTT evolving a full 3G-and-beyond network. EDGE will afford TSTT the ability to facilitate more customers who have a need to access Internet or corporate data quickly while on the move. At the same time, EDGE also expands the network’s voice capacity.
Access to the EDGE service is presently available in the northern and southern regions of Trinidad with further expansion to the rest of country scheduled by the end of April.
bmobile users can get the EDGE experience using compatible handsets like the new Blackberry 8700g, Nokia 6682, 8801, N90, Motorola Rokr and V186, Samsung D500 and SE W600. With EDGE mobile handsets become multimedia devices that can download video and music clips, deliver full multi-media messaging, surf the net at high speeds and get e-mail on the move.
TSTT mobile high speed technology can also support telecommuting, with people working from home or almost anywhere in the field.
