Rev Paul:
Reverend Cyril Paul yesterday called on the faithful to remember that in the Last Supper, Christ offered forgiveness of sins, the mercy of God’s love, and the promise of everlasting life.
He issued the appeal while giving his Holy Thursday Sermon at the Morton Memorial Presbyterian Church at Guaico, Tamana.
Paul said the Lord’s Supper was not invented by people or the church but a Sacrament initiated by Christ himself.
“It is the new covenant between God and us, made possible because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.” Paul said participation in the service was not because of goodness. He said the congregation was divinely invited. He said the Lord’s Supper was a feast of remembrance in which the people gave thanks. It was an occasion to remember that God’s son took the burden of sin, suffered on the cross and gave his life on their behalf.
Paul said, “We remember what he did for us, why he did it and what he accomplished for our salvation.”
He said the Holy Communion is a sacrament which stood for an outward and visible sign with an inward spiritual meaning. He said the bread and wine used in the service were physical elements which become part of the spiritual nature.
Paul said the focal point of attention is the Communion Table — “a constant reminder of a tremendous event that took place 2,000 years ago.” He said it was a perpetual symbol of God’s love. However, he said people had missed the mark and had fallen short.
“We have not lived up to our highest possibilities. We have all sinned. Nevertheless, the invitation is always the same.”
