Game Chaguanas go down in Super Ten
It was the feature match of a double-header with both teams seeking their first win of the tournament.
However, it was Chaguanas who took the game to their opponents as the central Trinidad school build on 15-13 first quarter lead that swelled to four points at half-time 34-30.
However, it was in the third quarter that St Mary’s got into a rhythm with a man-to-man pressure defence that produced 14 of St Mary’s 22 third-quarter points from lost balls.
Also, the session saw Sandy help himself to 19 second-half points from his match-high of 31 and Edwards scored 11 of his 20 that guided the Saints to their first win in two matches.
Chaguanas however showed a never-say-die approach even when they trailed by as much as 15 points with six minutes to go.
It was Chaguanas’ first competition of the season and they surely made the best of it with four players into double digits. Despite not recording a victory in their three-match campaign, Chaguanas’ scoring was led by Jumar Lucas and Christopher Ralph both of whom scored 14 points
In a girls’ match-up yesterday Joelisa Cooper continued her scoring spree when she sank a tournament-best 54 points in Morvant/Laventille’s 69-39 victory over San Juan Senior Comprehensive.
The first quarter was the most competitive for both schools but by half-time Morvant/Laventille had pulled away by 13 points (26-13) and never looked back.
Cooper scored 34 of her points in the second half to guide her school to their second win in as many matches, while it was San Juan’s second defeat in their two-match group campaign.
Guard Trimaine Ganteaume was San Juan’s stand-out for her ball-handling and scoring skills. She scored 15 points and team-mate Bellamy Villafana supported her effort with 14 points.
