Waiting to exhale

For the “breathalyser” to be effective, it might be necessary to station one or more police officers each with one of these devices, outside every night club and bar in the country.

The second item of good news is the relocation of Beetham garbage dump or landfill, as some persons prefer to call it, and which was poorly located in the first place, across the road from a substantially large housing project, and in the backyard of the Capital City, of what is referred to as the most advanced country in the Caribbean. No mention has been made of just where the new site for the garbage dump is going to be located but it is difficult to imagine that any site would be suitable in which to place a garbage dump of that magnitude.

We have already seen the results of moving the San Fernando garbage dump from its old location off the Lady Hailes Avenue to its new location at Forres Park, which in effect, was merely a case of moving the same old problem to another location. In the case of the Beetham dump, it will mean moving a much larger facility to a new location which has not yet been identified but which presumably has to be far removed from its present site and it is difficult to envisage at the moment any site that will be suitable. It seems to be just a matter of shifting the dump from one undesirable location to another which, might be as bad or worse than the present site. We shall wait and see.
