Cousins on $200,000 bail

Cajetan Thomas, 33, and Alvin Thomas, 20, of Valencia and Sangre Grande respectively, appeared before Magistrate Ejenny Espinet charged with stealing the salted fish, valued $4,084 between April 5 and 7. They were charged by PC Bobby Noyan of the Couva Police Station. On their first court appearance on Wednesday last, magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar denied them bail pending a trace of their criminal record.

They were not called upon to plead to the charge since it was laid indictably. When the cousins re-appeared yesterday, Court Prosecutor Sgt Sharon Corbett told Magistrate Espinet that Alvin had no previous convictions while his cousin had convictions for possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.

Attorney Martin Montrose who represented both accused pointed out that those offences had been committed ten years ago. Magistrate Espinet then granted them $100,000 bail each and ordered Alvin to report to the Sangre Grande and Cajetan, to the Valencia Police Station, on every Wednesday.
