Street named after murdered man

Mervyn Caton Snr yesterday questioned why the murder trial has not begun.

Caton Jnr was shot in the head on May 19, 2005 at the Togetherness Restaurant and Bar, Main Road, Egypt Village.

He died about three hours after the shooting at the San Fernando General Hospital.

A police constable attached to the Inter Agency Task Force, Sunil Tota Maharaj was arrested and charged for Caton Jnr’s murder. On October 28, 2005 Tota Maharaj was committed by a Point Fortin magistrate to stand trial in the San Fernando High Court.

Caton Snr’s call came following a candlelight vigil which was held on Friday at about 7 pm by villagers marking the one year death anniversary of Caton Jnr’s murder.

The villagers along with Caton Jnr’s relatives erected a street sign bearing the name of Mervyn Caton — “Mervyn Caton Drive.” “We did this in memoriam for him. He was a good child and loved by all,” Caton Snr said.

The new name replaced the old which was “Old Dam Road.”

The sign was revealed during a brief ceremony at the street’s corner in the presence of the Point Fortin Mayor Natta St Clair, Councillors Valentine Ferdinand and Abdon Mason and hundreds of villagers.

The prayer meeting service which was held on the spot where Caton Jnr was shot was conducted by Pastor Wilma Kelly of The Way of Holiness church in Point Fortin.
