Cunapo RC wins Atlantic LNG title

In the final played at Inshan Ali Park in Preysal on Thursday, Cunapo St Francis RC took the title with an easy victory over Siparia RC.

Batting first, Siparia were routed for 70 in 29 overs, with extras contributing 39, more than half of the total. Only Alex Alexander, with 16 not out, reached double figures.

Devon Thomas (three for nine), Patrick Parris (three for 16), Stephen Kerr (two for 15) and Micah Cadett (two for 18) did the damage for Cunapo.

Cunapo reached their victory target of 71 in 21 overs for the loss of four wickets, with Brian Solozano top-scoring with 16 not out. Solozano was named “Man-of-the-Match.”

The finals of the Girls Division will be played on Friday, June 2, 2006, at Guara-cara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Meanwhile, close contests are expected in the Big Four Super League semi-finals which are carded for Monday .

Defending champions Clarke Rochard Government, with the prolific Stephen Kitwaroo at the helm, take on Guayaguayare RC at PowerGen Ground, Penal.

Sangre Grande Hindu, which tied at the top of the preliminary standings with Clarke Rochard, meet fourth-placed Rancho Quemado Government at Alescon Comet Ground in Charlieville.

The Super League finals will be played at Guaracara Park on Friday, June 2, when trophies and awards won in the various competitions will be presented.

More than 300 schools from all eight education districts have participated in the 2006 Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Cricket League, with entry from Tobago for the first time in several years.

John Lewis, secretary of the National Primary Schools Cricket League, said several exciting talents are emerging form the competition, which augurs well for the sport in Trinidad and Tobago and the West Indies as well.

“The standard of play has been very high. We have had excellent batting form several players, with Kitwaroo, of course, showing great promise.

“The matches have been played in good spirit with excellent sportsmanship displayed throughout the competition. The Big Four semis should be very exciting and will be a treat for all who turn out to see the matches.

“The league owes a debt of gratitude to Atlantic LNG company for its commitment to the development of cricket at this primary level. This is really the nursery for the years ahead,” Lewis said.
